Dr. Sarah Pendergrass, PhD MS
I am a Genetic Epidemiologist and Bioinformatician and a nationally recognized expert in Phenome-Wide Association Studies (PheWAS), an approach investigating the association between genetic variation and wide range of phenotypic variables. I am expanding the use of electronic health record (EHR) based data for research through the novel use of EHR based complex disease and trait information, including the use of longitudinal and imaging data, to identify new important insights into complex multi-factorial disease. I am also developing novel approaches for how genetic data is used, and results are interpreted, in genetic association studies to power new discoveries. I have published over ten papers on methods and applications for PheWAS. My PhD focused on gene-expression analyses and bioinformatics for biomarker and biology discovery for the disease Systemic Sclerosis, and my masters work in Biomedical Engineering, and undergraduate degree in Physics, have provided me with additional technical and analytical expertise for complex data-driven projects.
